The playwright Deborah Zoe Laufer’s latest piece, which has its premiere in Florida, centers on two sisters, Emery and Hazel, who have lived in the same small upstate New York village for almost 60 years. Emery blogs extensively on plant consciousness. South Florida’s upcoming events for the upcoming week
But these modest sisters unexpectedly become an internet phenomenon when her favorite subject, her cherished tree Mabel, starts to acquire a religious/mystical significance. After Laufer’s play “Be Here Now,” which was also performed at Theatre Lab, “Rooted” is the second in a trilogy of plays that explore metaphysical themes in our grounded world. The show will continue through February 18.

“The humor is over!” The famous last line of Ruggero Leoncavallo’s opera “I Pagliacci” synthesizes the work’s deft genre-bending. “I Pagliacci,” despite its setting in a 19th-century Italian commedia dell’arte theater troupe, is as gloomy and melancholic as any operatic tragedy, with the main character playing a clown in a performance within a show.
Fundamentally, the drama is quite straightforward: The leader of the troupe, Canio, is in a love triangle with Nedda, Silvio, Nedda’s paramour, and Tonio, the stereotypical “fool” who is also in love with Nedda. The second act of the play is a fascinating metaconstruction of all the romantic entanglements swirling around, building to a crime of passion as each character breaks character.
For the first time in fifteen years, Florida Grand Opera will present “I Pagliacci,” with all three leads making their FGO debuts. South Florida’s upcoming events for the upcoming week

Painter Serge Strosberg was born in Belgium and now lives in New York, but he has always had a link to the Palm Beaches, where his most well-known shows have been shown in locations ranging from Jupiter to West Palm Beach to Boca Raton. He’s been on our shore so much that he could as well be an honorary member of the elite in the area; he’s the perfect artist to, as this display implies, reinvent Palm Beach.
Strosberg will concentrate his unique and striking style—a surreal fusion of naturalism and expressionism, frequently centered around the leisure class—on the giants and eccentrics who contributed to the transformation of swampland into a playground fit for a posh neighborhood. Among the people Strosberg’s new and respectful look falls upon are Solomon Spady, Henry Flagler, and Addison Mizner.
Additionally, augmented reality will be used in the exhibition to put visitors in the center of several Palm Beach island areas of interest. The show is on display through May. South Florida’s upcoming events for the upcoming week

As one of NPR’s mainstays by 2015, it would draw in 4 million weekly listeners, host performances by celebrities like Renee Fleming, Bonnie Raitt, and James Taylor, serve as the inspiration for a major Robert Altman film, and receive a voicemail from President Barack Obama.
The program was steered by longstanding host and global representative of “Minnesota nice,” Garrison Keillor, until 2016, when it vanished under a new name and host. However, Keillor is getting the old crew back together this year for a festive tour that will include live music, his own stand-up comedy, which will highlight the joys of being 80, and news bulletins from Lake Wobegon, his favorite made-up little town.
